Coating Concrete in a Town Planned Around Engines
Epoxy flooring in Speedway often means working on concrete that has seen a lot of years. The town was laid out in 1912 as a residential suburb west of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, planned by Carl Fisher, James Allison, Frank Wheeler and Arthur Newby around their own plants. Many blocks still carry houses and garages from those early decades. Their slabs tend to be thinner, patched in places, and often painted more than once. We plan a Speedway job around what that old concrete will and will not accept.
Why old garage slabs need more prep
A garage poured before modern mixes and finishing tools can have a soft top layer, hairline cracks across the whole bay, and low spots where water collects by the door. Paint that has peeled for years hides some of that. Before we talk about color, we:
- Grind off old paint and sealer down to sound concrete
- Sound the slab for hollow or delaminated patches
- Fill cracks and rebuild broken edges at the apron
- Check for moisture coming up from below
If the slab is too far gone, we say so. A coating will not hold together concrete that is crumbling underneath it.
Small lots, tight work areas
Speedway covers about 4.79 square miles and is an enclave surrounded by Indianapolis, so lots tend to be compact. That affects how we stage a job. Our grinders and vacuums need power and a short path in and out, and the floor has to stay closed while it cures. We work out where your cars and storage go during the job before we start, so nothing ends up blocking a neighbor's driveway or alley.
Shop floors for the racing trade
The area south of the track holds the United States Auto Club headquarters, the Dallara racecar factory, A. J. Foyt Racing, Harding Racing and an indoor karting track. Fabrication shops, team garages and home workshops all ask the same things of a floor: it has to shrug off oil, coolant and brake fluid, take rolling jacks and stands, and be easy to wipe clean so small parts are easy to spot. For that kind of space we usually suggest:
- Commercial floor epoxy at a thicker build for jack and lift traffic
- Flake epoxy floors with a chemical-resistant topcoat for team garages and home shops
- Polyaspartic topcoats where a shop needs to reopen quickly
We can also mark out bays or walkways in a contrasting color if your shop wants clear work zones.
Basements and humid summers
Speedway sits along Eagle Creek, Little Eagle Creek and Dry Run, and central Indiana gets about 40 inches of precipitation a year. Older basements here can feel damp in summer and show white efflorescence along the walls. Basement floor epoxy can make that space brighter and easier to clean, but only after we test the slab. When readings are high we use a moisture-tolerant primer, and if water is coming in through cracks or walls we point that out first.
Choosing a finish for a Speedway garage
Most homeowners here pick a flake floor for the garage because it hides dust and grit and gives some traction when salty slush melts off a car in January. Metallic epoxy is a better fit for a finished basement or a small dealership space. We bring samples to the estimate so you can see them on your own floor under your own lights.

- A compact, growing town. Speedway grew from 11,812 residents in 2010 to 13,952 in 2020 and covers about 4.79 square miles, with 6,731 housing units counted in 2020.

Speedway Questions
Can you coat a detached garage in Speedway that has old paint on the floor?
Yes, in most cases. We grind the old paint off completely, because new coating bonded to old paint is only as strong as that paint. Then we repair cracks and the door edge before the base coat goes down.
Do you coat race shop and fabrication floors?
We do. For shops that handle oil, coolant and brake fluid, we use a thicker commercial build with a chemical-resistant topcoat. We walk the space first to plan around lifts, drains and equipment that cannot be moved.
How long will my garage be out of use?
Most single and two-car garages take one to two days of work. Foot traffic comes first, and driving on the floor waits longer. We give you the cure times in writing for the system you pick.
